Literary Journal Publishing Panel Celebrating Natural Bridge's 15th Birthday

Hello all,

We're busy in the office this week beginning the layout process for our spring issue, but I wanted to take a minute to tell you about a wonderful event coming up in St. Louis. Our good friends at Natural Bridge magazine are hosting a literary journal publishing panel in honor of their fifteenth birthday! The panel will include representatives from River Styx, Boulevard, The Missouri Review, Architrave Press, and you guessed it, yours truly--WAQ. There will also be a reception and book fair following the panel discussion. It should be a really great evening, so please join us in the J.C. Penney auditorium at the University of Missouri-St. Louis on Friday, February 8th, at 7pm! The event is free and open to the public.

Volume 3, Issue 1

Happy New Year, Everyone!

The new issue of WAQ, volume 3, issue 1, is hot off the press and now available to purchase online here. We're really excited about starting a new volume and about the content of this issue. Inside you'll find a fabulous interview with poet Traci Brimhall, whose latest book, Our Lady of the Ruins (W. W. Norton, 2012), was the winner of the Barnard Women Poets Prize, selected by Carolyn Forche. We've also got some really intriguing art by San Francisco artist Jamie Vasta, who works primarily with glitter on wood panel. That's right, people--I said glitter! Her work is really provocative, so you'll want to make sure to check it out. On the fiction end of things, we've got an uncanny flash fiction piece called "Sagres" by Louella Bryant and a funny and thoughtful piece called "Better Half" by Erika Swyler. The rest of the issue is comprised of an essay by A. A. Balaskovits that examines the paradox of what we humans will and won't kill; gorgeous poetry by Michelle Bonczek, Rhonda Lott, Dana Koster, and others; and a review of an experimental German quartet's performance of Hazel Leach's music about the nature of psychosis: Songs from the Edge: Hazel Leach Performed by PLoTS. In other news, WAQ is now a nationally-distributed publication! Beginning with volume 3, issue 1, the journal can be found in 50+ stores nationwide. Stephanie Powell Watts on Women in the Arts at the U

On the radio show last week, we were very fortunate to host fiction writer Stephanie Powell Watts, whose collection of short stories, We are Taking Only What We Need, was selected by the New Yorker as one of the Best Books of 2012, was a finalist for the Hemingway Foundation/Pen Award, and is the 2012 recipient of the Ernest J. Gail Soliwoda Cassilly on Women in the Arts at the U

Last Thursday, 11/29, we hosted the accomplished sculptor and writer, Gail Soliwoda Cassilly, on Women in the Arts at the U. Gail, who is co-founder of the world-famous City Museum, recently published her fascinating memoir, Saltwater, documenting everything from the ten years she spent working in Africa as a nun, to her struggles with alcoholism and marriage to eccentric artistic genius, the late Bob Cassilly. Gail is a wonderful writer who describes her life and times with vivid imagery and emotional honesty, so I highly recommend getting a copy of her book. Listen to the interview HERE.

The Legendary Mary Troy on Women in the Arts at the U

Last Thursday on the radio show, we had the pleasure of hosting one of my favorite people in the whole world--the great fiction writer, editor, teacher, and mentor, Mary Troy. In St. Louis, Mary is a bit of an institution; everyone in the literary community knows her and everyone adores her. Of course, I am a bit partial because she was my thesis adviser and mentor in my MFA program, but I'm sure you will all agree that this lady has got some fierce talent after you listen to her read from her new, yet to be published novel--the follow up to her acclaimed 2010 novel, Beauties (BkMk Press), which won the USA Book Award. In in the interview, Mary, who is the editor of Natural Bridge magazine and the former director of the Creative Writing MFA program at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, gives some good advice about applying to MFA programs.
