Hello everyone!

We're excited to announce the release of WomenArts Quarterly Journal Volume 4, Issue 2, which features a fantastic interview between poets Susana H. Case and Laura Madeline Wiseman. We've also got some really engaging visual art in this issue: paintings by Melissa Wilkinson that subvert the elitism often associated with the old masters. In the fiction department, we have "Stolen Things" by Abbigail N. Rosewood--a haunting story that questions whether it's ever possible to leave your past behind you. All of this and many other fascinating pieces in our newest issue, available for purchase online and in a bookstore near you. Enjoy!
WomenArts Quarterly Journal is a peer-reviewed journal
published at the University of Missouri-St. Louis and is part of the Women in
the Arts organization. It publishes a collection of poetry, interviews, and
reviews, all created by women, in virtually any field of art.

This issue features an informative and interesting interview
with the musician Anne King whose name you may recognize from Whose Line Is It
Anyway? where she worked as one of the musicians on the show. King has also
worked on shows such as American Idol and The Voice and currently is on tour
with Rod Stewart. This interview explores how King finds success through taking
every opportunity that is thrown her way and by building and being an active
member in the artistic community. There is something in this article that any
artist could learn from.

“How To Desire” by Wandajune Bishop-Towle is a poem that is
strongly constructed and works on many levels to help the reader discover “how
to desire” as well as create desire within the reader. The poem begins, “Be as
a pencil, shaved raw, / a sieve, with openings the size of words.” Bishop-Towle
creates desire not only with her words but also with line breaks—when the first
line ends with the word “raw” it leaves the reader hanging in a vulnerable
state wondering where to go next. The poem is constructed in an instructional
manner and ends, “Lean. Lean further. Fall. Listen / the way a shutter’s hinge
/ listens for winter’s mountains.”

Another intriguing poem in this issue is Charlene Logan
Burnett’s “Sleepwalking at Age Seven.” Written in a dream like tone, it fuses
the real world with surrealist moments in order to create a dream-like state
that the narrator is experiencing:

Lily of the valley grows in the woods. I smell the
bell-shaped flowers. I was told not to eat the red berries, and I don’t, but I
am so groggy, the floor beneath me turns to swamp.

I am drowning. Tree stumps float past. Tadpoles swim in my
ears.

Burnett uses sleepwalking as a way for the young narrator to
rationalize what they have witnessed and ends, “Someone reaches down and grabs
me. A woman with red hair . . . The woman is my father. I am sure of it. As we
float down the hall, I listen to the rustle of his dress. His green heels are
flocked in moss.”

Caitlin K. Clark’s fiction piece “Variations on a Dying
Swan” is an impactful story told in the third person that, in many ways, works
to do what the journal as a whole aims for: showcases the work of women
creators in as many ways as possible and tells the story about the stage of
life and death. This story helps to bridge the gap between the stage of a
ballerina and the page of a writer. On the surface, it is about a ballerina,
who has fallen ill and faces death, living and never dancing again. The story
begins describing how she used the pain of childhood ailments to inspire her
Swan so that it would, “look weak, although dance required strength.” To cope,
the ballerina imagines what it will be like to bring this part of her life to
the stage and how the Swan will adapt. She envisions audiences finding her new
swan even more beautiful than the last and when asked she will say, “My
illness. I learned from my illness.” As the ballerina prepares to walk on to
the stage of death as a testament to how passionate her dancing was, she feels
“butterflies” and she tells the butterflies, “Shhh, there is nothing to fear.
You have already done this, four thousand times before.”

A few weeks back, we had the fascinating Dr. Kathleen Butterly Nigro on the program to discuss her research in gender studies and teaching philosophy. We even got Kathleen's opinion on the notorious Miley Cyrus. So check out the interview here and learn why Kathleen says we have to investigate the past to understand the present.
Yesterday, on Women in the Arts at the U, we had the fascinating Katherine Mitchell as our guest. Katherine, a dancer, poet, teacher, and Director of St. Louis Center for the Alexander Technique, had great insight on how movement and gesture affect artistic performance. In addition, she also treated us to a reading of some of her fabulous poetry! Check out the interview here.
Hello Everyone!

We recently had the amazing poet and Iowa Writers' Workshop grad Stephanie Schlaifer on the radio show to discuss her artistic process; working on visual art with her husband, artist Arny Nadler; and submitting to literary manuscript contests. She also read some of her poetry for us. Check out the interview here.

In other news, we are super duper close to sending volume 3, issue 2 of WAQ to the printer. Look for it in bookstores in mid-April.
Hi Everyone!

We recently had professor of music education Dr. Gail Fleming on the radio show to talk about her experiences teaching music, as well as writing a book about American choral composer, arranger, and educator, Alice Parker. But one of the most unique things about Gail (and there are many) is her fantastic attitude and unshakable confidence in pursuing her artistic goals. It's truly inspiring! Listen to the interview here.
Last week on the radio show Dr. Jennifer Mishra was our guest. Jennifer is an associate professor and the coordinator of Music Education at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. She talked to us about her fascinating research in expert theory, specifically how to teach children to use the techniques expert music performers use to learn and perform at their highest ability. It's really interesting stuff, and the over-arching theory can really be applied to any kind of artistic practice. Check out the interview here.
In other news, volume 3, issue 2 of WAQ is going to print soon, so we've been in the editing cave. Look for it in stores around the beginning of April, and make sure to check out our website periodically for more info.

Hello all,

We're busy in the office this week beginning the layout process for our spring issue, but I wanted to take a minute to tell you about a wonderful event coming up in St. Louis. Our good friends at Natural Bridge magazine are hosting a literary journal publishing panel in honor of their fifteenth birthday! The panel will include representatives from River Styx, Boulevard, The Missouri Review, Architrave Press, and you guessed it, yours truly--WAQ. There will also be a reception and book fair following the panel discussion. It should be a really great evening, so please join us in the J.C. Penney auditorium at the University of Missouri-St. Louis on Friday, February 8th, at 7pm! The event is free and open to the public.
The new issue of WAQ, volume 3, issue 1, is hot off the press and now available to purchase online here. We're really excited about starting a new volume and about the content of this issue. Inside you'll find a fabulous interview with poet Traci Brimhall, whose latest book, Our Lady of the Ruins (W. W. Norton, 2012), was the winner of the Barnard Women Poets Prize, selected by Carolyn Forche. We've also got some really intriguing art by San Francisco artist Jamie Vasta, who works primarily with glitter on wood panel. That's right, people--I said glitter! Her work is really provocative, so you'll want to make sure to check it out. On the fiction end of things, we've got an uncanny flash fiction piece called "Sagres" by Louella Bryant and a funny and thoughtful piece called "Better Half" by Erika Swyler. The rest of the issue is comprised of an essay by A. A. Balaskovits that examines the paradox of what we humans will and won't kill; gorgeous poetry by Michelle Bonczek, Rhonda Lott, Dana Koster, and others; and a review of an experimental German quartet's performance of Hazel Leach's music about the nature of psychosis: Songs from the Edge: Hazel Leach Performed by PLoTS. And you, ladies and gentleman, can have it all for the bargain price of $5.95 in stores and $7 online (shipping included)!

In other news, WAQ is now a nationally-distributed publication! Beginning with volume 3, issue 1, the journal can be found in 50+ stores nationwide. We are working on getting a list of those stores from our very busy distributor. As soon as we've got it, we'll post it under the "Stores" link on our website. For now, get your copy here.
On the radio show last week, we were very fortunate to host fiction writer Stephanie Powell Watts, whose collection of short stories, We are Taking Only What We Need, was selected by the New Yorker as one of the Best Books of 2012, was a finalist for the Hemingway Foundation/Pen Award, and is the 2012 recipient of the Ernest J. Gaines Award for Literary Excellence. Ever humble and insightful, Stephanie stopped by the studio to chat with us about her creative process. Last Thursday, 11/29, we hosted the accomplished sculptor and writer, Gail Soliwoda Cassilly, on Women in the Arts at the U. Gail, who is co-founder of the world-famous City Museum, recently published her fascinating memoir, Saltwater, documenting everything from the ten years she spent working in Africa as a nun, to her struggles with alcoholism and marriage to eccentric artistic genius, the late Bob Cassilly. Gail is a wonderful writer who describes her life and times with vivid imagery and emotional honesty, so I highly recommend getting a copy of her book. In St. Louis, Mary is a bit of an institution; everyone in the literary community knows her and everyone adores her. Of course, I am a bit partial because she was my thesis adviser and mentor in my MFA program, but I'm sure you will all agree that this lady has got some fierce talent after you listen to her read from her new, yet to be published novel--the follow up to her acclaimed 2010 novel, Beauties (BkMk Press), which won the USA Book Award. In in the interview, Mary, who is the editor of Natural Bridge magazine and the former director of the Creative Writing MFA program at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, gives some good advice about applying to MFA programs. An Attempt at Answering a Difficult QuestionYou know, producing an arts magazine is mostly great. There are so many things I like about it that I really can't name them all. But there is one part of the job that is rather unfortunate but completely necessary: the declining of submissions. Sometimes, after we decline a submission, having expressed to the submitter that the piece just wasn't right for us, we will get an email response saying something along the lines of "If this isn't what you're looking for, then what are you looking for?" This is a very difficult question to answer, as submissions are chosen based on the way they make us feel more than anything else. Though I cannot really explain what we want in a submission, I will attempt to describe what we don't want in hopes of shedding some light on this elusive subject.

1. Typically, we don't like stories, poems, essays, or art that is sentimental. That being said, what is sentimental to one person may be dark and disturbing to another; however, among our staff, if one editor thinks a piece is too sentimental, chances are that when the other editors weigh in they too will think the same thing. That's largely because WAQ's editors have similar tastes and tend to pick up on the same issues (as we see them) in submissions. That's not to say we don't ever disagree about a submission. We do. But an editorial team is typically assembled with like-minded people to create a synergy (if I may be so bold as to use that new-agey term) among the ranks. If your submission is declined by us, you may send it to another journal that scoops it up right away. Every journal is loyal to its own particular point of view, which is necessary in order to create a cohesive product with a vibe that speaks of those who created it. When we put out an issue, we are, in effect, saying, "This is what we like. We hope you like it too." While pieces that are sentimental may knock the socks off another journal, we, at WAQ, prefer work in which writers or artists have built a framework for real, earned emotion. What I mean by this is that we want to have a natural emotional response to a piece of work, without the author having to include a sad cancer death bed scene or show a kitten being run over by car. Those are both extreme examples, but what I'm trying to say is that if you lay the proper framework in, say, a short story by painstakingly developing characters and plots that feel real and relatable, you will get us to feel something without having to pull sentimentality out of your bag of tricks.

2. Beware of writing about overly familiar topics. Death, divorce, disease--these things happen in real life and are very sad when they do, but on the page they often come off as boring or even stereotypical. If you are going to write about an experience that is familiar to many, you have to tell it slant, as Emily Dickinson said. Find a way to shed new light on an old topic. But also beware of creating work that is off the wall in an effort to avoid writing something familiar. It will likely come off as a contrived. So, what does one do, then? What we like at WAQ typically falls somewhere between the overly familiar storyline and the off the wall storyline. We love when writers or poets take us into a world we don't necessarily know very much about, then make that world relatable by examining the complexity of life through well-developed characters. When a story or essay or poem articulates a truth about life in a way that makes us think, I couldn't have said it better myself, then we know we have something special on our hands.

3. Endings. They are so difficult to write, and unfortunately, we writers don't always end our works in the best place or with the right words. It takes time and revision to figure out how to execute the best ending for a piece. There have been many instances when we've enjoyed a submission until we got to the end and were suddenly left feeling dissatisfied. Sometimes a piece may end too soon; sometimes it may go on for too long. Sometimes a writer has yet to find the right words that will leave us haunted by a piece long after we've read it. Often, if a submission fails to deliver, there is a turn of events near the end that doesn't feel authentic to the world of the story. Even more often, a piece will fail to shake anything up; there won't be enough that happens or changes in the world of the story. To gage if your story has one of the aforementioned issues, try having different friends read it and ask them to describe how the ending made them feel.

I hope this helps anyone who is interested in better understanding what WAQ is looking for with its submissions. We are just one journal of many, trying to be faithful to our point of view. If one piece you send us doesn't float our boat, send us more. You never know what might pique our interests. And as always, the best way to get an idea of what we like is to read the journal.
Jennifer does a lot of fascinating work in the St. Louis arts community, so it was really great to talk with her. Among her ventures is Architrave Press, which publishes beautiful letterpress poetry in two editions a year. But here's what makes Architrave unique: sure, you can buy an entire edition, but the poems are also sold individually like songs. I love going to her events and picking out poems--it's like collecting trading cards, but for literally nerds! As soon as I get my act together, I fully intend to frame the ones I've collected from various editions and hang them above my writing desk for inspiration. The poems are also great to give as gifts to the literary-minded.

So mosey on over to Archtrave Press and buy some poems, ok? Seriously, you'll be happy you did. And all your friends will think you're cool.
